Key terms every homeowner needs

Clear definitions for common remodeling terms to help homeowners understand options and choose the right solutions.

Low-E glass

Vinyl siding

U-factor

U-factor measures how much heat a window lets pass through. Lower numbers mean better insulation and less heat entering or escaping your home. When we recommend windows, we point out the U-factor so you can see which options will keep rooms more comfortable.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) shows how much of the sun's heat passes through a window. It is given as a number between 0 and 1. Lower SHGC values block more heat, which is especially important on west and south facing glass if you want cooler rooms and lower cooling bills.

Insulation R-value

Insulation R-value rates how strongly a material resists heat flow. Higher R-values mean better insulation. In siding projects, the R-value of the backing or housewrap helps determine how well the wall system will slow heat gain, which can improve comfort and energy savings over time.

Hail impact rating

Hail impact rating indicates how well a product stands up to hail and wind driven debris. Siding and roofing materials are often tested to standardized impact levels. Choosing products with stronger ratings helps reduce the chance of cracks, dents, or punctures when storms move through.

Thermal break

Thermal break is a barrier built into window or sunroom frames to slow the transfer of heat between the outside metal or vinyl and the inside of your home. A proper thermal break helps keep frames cooler to the touch and supports better overall energy performance in hot weather.

Built-out wrap

Built-out wrap refers to the weather barrier and preparation installed over your existing wall sheathing before new siding goes on. This layer can include housewrap, flashing, and insulation, and it helps shed water, tighten the building envelope, and provide a smoother base for a clean, long-lasting finish.

Tempered safety glass

Tempered safety glass is heat treated glass that is several times stronger than regular glass. When it breaks, it crumbles into small pieces instead of large sharp shards. We use tempered glass in sunrooms, patio doors, and low windows where building codes require higher safety protection.

Factory-direct pricing

Factory-direct pricing means we purchase windows, siding, and enclosure components directly from manufacturers rather than through extra middle layers. This reduces markup, allows us to pass along discounts up to 40 percent in some cases, and still maintain installation and warranty support.
